From Numbing to Living: The Deep Work of Healing

When life gets overwhelming, we often look for ways to numb. Some of us numb with busyness, filling every moment with tasks so we don’t have to sit with our thoughts. Others numb with success, believing that if we just achieve more, the pain will hurt less. Still others numb with food, relationships, or silence.
The problem with numbing is that it doesn’t just block the pain — it blocks the joy, too. It robs us of the chance to live fully. Healing requires us to stop numbing and start feeling. That’s the deep work — to sit with the discomfort long enough to discover what’s beneath it.
One tool we use is what I call a healing cheat code:
1️⃣ Name your trigger.
2️⃣ Pause before reacting.
3️⃣ Breathe deeply to re-center.
4️⃣ Choose a different response.
At STRETCH, we’ll lean into the deep work together. We’ll replace numbing with living and survival with thriving.
