27 Years, 27 lessons: my hall of fame reflection

Updated: 2 days ago

This past weekend, I experienced one of the most meaningful honors of my career—being inducted into the 32nd Educators Hall of Fame. As I woke up this Monday morning, I found myself still sitting in gratitude, replaying the moments, and acknowledging the journey that brought me here.

27 years in education have taught me more than I can put into words. For this moment, I chose to share 27 lessons—one from every year I’ve served. These lessons are snapshots of a journey filled with faith, grit, resilience, joy, heartbreak, healing, and purpose.

Hall of Fame Induction

27 Lessons Learned Over 27 Years

  1. Lead with heart—even when your heart is tired.

  2. Your purpose will pull you even when motivation won’t.

  3. Children remember how you made them feel long after they forget the lesson you taught.

  4. Excellence requires sacrifice, and sacrifice requires love.

  5. Every season won’t be rewarding, but every season will reveal something.

  6. You cannot pour from an empty cup—rest is part of the assignment.

  7. Protect your joy like it’s part of your job description.

  8. Leadership is not about title—it’s about impact.

  9. Show up for people, even when the room is small.

10. Your “why” will evolve, and that is a sign of growth, not confusion.

AAABSE Family

11. You can’t save everyone, but you can see everyone.

12. Sometimes the miracle is simply that you’re still standing.

13. When God says move, move—even if you’re scared.

14. The kids who challenged you the most often teach you the most.

15. Don’t shrink to make others comfortable—someone needs the fullness of who you are.

16. Grace is a leadership skill.

17. Your voice matters, even when you tremble to use it.

18. Never underestimate the blessing of a colleague who becomes family.

19. Community is built on consistency, not perfection.

20. Celebrate your wins loudly—your younger self deserves it.

21. Every closed door redirected me to a better one.

22. Your personal healing is professional development.

23. God will always place the right people in the room at the right time.

24. You can be strong and still need support.

25. Honor the journey, not just the milestones.

26. Love your people fiercely—they sustain you more than you know.

27. You can be called to serve and still be worthy of being celebrated.

Reflections on the Journey

As I reflect on my journey, I realize that each lesson carries a story. Each year in education has shaped me, and I am grateful for the experiences that have led to this moment.

The Power of Connection

Connection is vital. It’s what fuels our passion and drives our purpose. I’ve learned that relationships matter more than accolades. The bonds we create with students, colleagues, and our communities are what truly define our impact.

Embracing Vulnerability

Vulnerability is often seen as a weakness, but I’ve found it to be a strength. Sharing my struggles and triumphs has allowed me to connect deeply with others. When we embrace our authentic selves, we invite others to do the same.

The Importance of Self-Care

In the hustle of our careers, self-care can take a backseat. However, I’ve learned that prioritizing our well-being is essential. We cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking time to recharge allows us to show up fully for those we serve.

Celebrating Small Wins

It’s easy to overlook the small victories in our daily lives. However, I’ve learned to celebrate every win, no matter how small. Each step forward is a testament to our growth and resilience.

Looking Ahead with Hope

As I step into this new week, I carry these lessons with me. I am excited about what lies ahead. The journey continues, and I am ready to embrace it with open arms.

Thank you for being part of this journey with me. Let’s continue to lift each other up and celebrate our shared successes. Together, we can create a brighter future.
