Giving Yourself Permission to Rest: Making Room for the Woman Behind the Mask

A cup of decaf coffee. My book. A moment in bed without rushing into the next thing.

That picture may look simple. For me, it represents something I am still learning: I am allowed to make room for myself before everything else is handled.

When you are used to being the dependable one, even a quiet moment can come with a mental list. Who needs something? What have I forgotten? What should I be doing instead?

I know that woman. I have been that woman. Sometimes, I still am.

There is a woman behind the role

The leader. The mother. The person who figures it out. The one people trust to keep things moving.

Those roles matter to me. But there is more to who I am than what I can carry.

There is a woman who enjoys a quiet morning. Who wants to laugh without checking the time. Who needs rest, connection, and room to hear herself think.

Giving myself permission to rest means allowing her to have a place in my life, too.

I do not want to keep postponing my life until the list is finished. There will always be another responsibility. I am learning to honor the responsibilities I have while remembering that I am one of them.

PAUSE comes first

My Leadership Without the Mask framework follows five steps: PAUSE → DISCERN → OWN → CHOOSE → LEAD.

PAUSE comes first because I need a moment to notice what is happening before I make another decision.

Sometimes that pause happens before I agree to something. Sometimes it happens when I realize I have been moving all day without checking in with myself.

A pause can be as ordinary as finishing my coffee while it is still warm. Closing the laptop at the time I intended. Taking a few minutes before answering a request.

It gives me space to recognize my capacity and choose with more honesty. Being dependable includes telling the truth about what I can reasonably give.

Carrying the conversation beyond STRETCH

At STRETCH, we made room for conversations about the person behind the mask. That conversation matters after the room has emptied and we return to our everyday lives.

I want the work of Reaching Through to meet us there, in the ordinary moments when we decide how we will live.

Permission can look small. An honest answer. A boundary we keep. A moment of joy we allow ourselves to enjoy. A little room to breathe.

We do not have to wait for a major life change to begin practicing it.

You are allowed to have a life that includes you

I wrote Beyond the Mask: Giving Yourself Permission to Live as someone still learning, still growing, and still giving herself permission.

The book opens a personal conversation about identity, achievement, healing, and living beyond what we produce.

If you recognize yourself in the woman who keeps everything moving, I hope you will make room for this conversation at your own pace.

Maybe that begins with a quiet morning, a cup of coffee, and a few pages.

I have said I want to die empty. I am also learning this: to die empty, I must live fully.

That includes making room for me. It includes making room for you, too.
